1969年アトランティックから発売の14枚目のスタジオアルバム。タイトルが「ソウル’69」なんで、バリバリのソウル路線かと思いきやソウルよりの曲もあるが、ほぼジャズボーカルのようなアルバム。
レコーディングに参加したミュージシャンは当時でも売れっ子のジャズミュージシャンを揃えてきています。大御所でいえばJunior Mance, Joe Zawinul, Kenny Burrell, Ron Carter と、そりゃこれだけの人集めればジャズになります。
仕掛け人はおそらくプロデューサーの Jerry Wexler氏でしょうか？Aretha Arrivesでも書きましたが、アトランティックのアレサに欠ける情熱とJerry Wexler氏の次から次へと仕掛ける戦略は素晴らしいし、その仕掛けと要求にすべて応えられるアレサの実力がうかがい知れ、アレサのスケールアップっぷりにも感心してしまいます。
もともとはコロンビアからゴスペル、ジャズ路線でデビューしてた人だったんで不思議でも何でもないですが、鳴かず飛ばずだったコロンビアのイメージを完全にを乗り越えたんではないでしょうか。
